Senior Electronic Engineer

  • Permanent
  • Anywhere

An established UK engineering business is looking to add an Electronics & Embedded Systems Engineer to its product development team. This role offers the opportunity to work across the full lifecycle of complex electronic systems, from concept and schematic design through to firmware development, validation, and production support.

Reporting to the Lead Electronic & Embedded Engineer, you’ll be trusted to own defined subsystems, contribute to technical decisions, and work closely with mechanical, software, manufacturing, and supply chain teams, while being supported by an experienced lead engineer.
What you’ll be doing

  • Designing mixed-signal electronic circuits (analogue, digital, and power) from concept to production using Altium
  • Developing embedded firmware in C/C++ (bare-metal and/or RTOS-based), including drivers, BSPs, and application code
  • Supporting PCB layout with consideration for signal integrity, EMC, thermal performance, and manufacturability
  • Selecting and evaluating electronic components, balancing performance, cost, and availability
  • Bringing up and debugging new hardware using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and other lab tools
  • Supporting prototype builds, low-volume PCB testing, and early production activities
  • Managing obsolescence and end-of-life component replacements
  • Producing and supporting wiring looms, cables, and associated manufacturing documentation
  • Planning and executing functional testing and contributing to design verification activities
  • Supporting compliance-related testing such as EMC and safety, with guidance
  • Maintaining accurate design documentation and supporting engineering change processes

What we’re looking for

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related discipline
  • Commercial experience in electronics design and embedded systems development
  • Strong working knowledge of embedded C/C++ and microcontroller-based systems
  • Hands-on experience with PCB bring-up, fault-finding, and lab-based debugging
  • Ability to work independently on defined technical tasks while managing priorities
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative mindset

Nice to have

  • RTOS-based embedded systems experience
  • STM32 microcontrollers and Keil IDE
  • Exposure to EMC, safety, or regulatory testing
  • Experience with design changes, component substitutions, and lifecycle support
  • Fine-pitch soldering and rework (down to 0402 and high-density ICs)
  • CPLD/FPGA exposure
  • Embedded Linux, image processing, or DSP experience
  • Familiarity with Jira or similar tools
  • C# / .NET-based test frameworks

Location & flexibility

  • Hybrid working with 2-3 days onsite but can be less/more depending on activities – a VERY pragmatic environment!
  • Occasional international travel (typically short trips)

If you enjoy working close to the hardware, value ownership over your designs, and want to be part of a pragmatic engineering team building real-world systems, this role would suit you well.
