GTS are partnering with a world-leading Formula One team to recruit a Mechanical Inspection Team Leader to join their Quality Assurance function.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Inspector, Lead Inspector or CMM Programmer looking to take the next step in their career.
The role combines hands-on inspection and metrology activities with leadership responsibilities, ensuring the delivery of world-class quality standards across a fast-paced, high-performance manufacturing environment. Approximately 60% of your time will be spent carrying out technical inspection and CMM programming activities, with the remainder focused on team leadership, planning, reporting and continuous improvement initiatives.
Working at the cutting edge of motorsport technology, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring every component meets the exacting standards required for Formula One competition.
The Role
As Mechanical Inspection Team Leader, you will oversee the daily operation of the inspection department, supporting a team of inspectors while remaining actively involved in complex inspection and metrology activities.
You will coordinate inspection priorities, support production requirements, mentor team members and act as the technical expert for CMM programming and dimensional inspection activities.
This role requires a strong blend of technical expertise, leadership capability and problem-solving skills within a precision engineering environment.
Key Responsibilities Team Leadership
- Lead, motivate and support the Mechanical Inspection team on a day-to-day basis
- Allocate workloads and inspection priorities to meet manufacturing schedules
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring and training to inspectors
- Conduct team briefings and communicate departmental objectives
- Monitor team performance and support continuous development
- Promote a strong quality and safety culture across the department
- Act as the first point of escalation for inspection-related issues
Inspection & Metrology
- Programme and operate CMM equipment using PC-DMIS software
- Perform dimensional inspection of precision machined components and assemblies
- Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models and GD&T specifications
- Generate and maintain inspection programmes and documentation
- Utilise a range of metrology equipment including:
- CMMs
- Portable Arms
- Shadowgraphs
- Surface Finish Equipment
- Contour Measurement Equipment
- Conventional Measuring Tools
- Review inspection reports and approve component release documentation
- Support first-off, in-process and final inspection activities
- Investigate non-conformances and support corrective actions
Continuous Improvement
- Drive improvements in inspection efficiency and quality processes
- Support implementation of best practice metrology techniques
- Collaborate with Manufacturing, Production and Engineering teams to improve product quality
- Standardise inspection methods and reporting procedures
- Contribute to departmental KPIs and performance objectives
About You Essential Requirements
- Proven experience within a Mechanical Inspection, Quality Inspection or Metrology environment
- Strong hands-on CMM programming experience using PC-DMIS
- Excellent understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T
- Experience inspecting complex precision-machined components
- Strong knowledge of manufacturing and machining processes
- Previous experience supporting, mentoring or leading colleagues within an inspection function
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving capability
- Experience using ERP/MRP systems
Desirable Requirements
- Previous Team Leader, Lead Inspector or Senior Inspector experience
- Experience within Formula One, Motorsport, Aerospace or other high-precision industries
- Experience using PolyWorks or other metrology software
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement knowledge
- HNC/HND or equivalent Engineering qualification
